What we did
  • Flute
    • Aliyah is working on consistency playing Bb, C, and D (she needs to purchase a book)
    • Ray'Niece and Nina started flute today and are at the beginning stages of establishing consistent sound on the headjoint and fully assembles flute

  • Trumpets and Trombone (Haleigh No achievements shown due to absence)
    • Haleigh did not bring instrument today (3 weeks in a row) Progress is at a stand still.
    • Hector and I worked to establish a better foundation for embouchure and air production. The goal here is to help him achieve a more attainable and consistent tone quality.
      • We worked to bring his horn angle down to be more even. His set right now is that his head is down and the horn is angled up forcing the air towards the bottom of the mouthpiece. Trying to establish a more "O" shape in the aperture by pulling the jaw towards the floor.
      • The approach to air right now is that he is too tense and pinching the air stream. By opening the throat and pushing from the diaphragm, Hector was able to establish better sound and control. He now just needs to work on consistency.

  • Alto Saxophones
    • Assessed performance targets for Line 23.
      • Time and pulse are still a little sloppy but better when a slower tempo is taken.
    • Move forward to line 25 (One Step At A Time) and 28 (complete the composition); Also, look at line 30 to establish the E

  • Percussion - (Tyra no instrument today)
    • Established correct grip and single bounce stroke on drum stick
    • Started Haskell-Harr lesson 6
    • Assessment: Grip and stroke is developing nicely. They appear to be developing soft hands and consistent stroke. Rhythm and time seem fairly solid
    • Continue with Haskell-Harr lesson 7 which contain 8th note rhythms

All Students
  • Clapping quarter, half and whole note rhythms from Supplemental Materials: lines 1-8 (includes the quarter rest)

What to do
  • Percussion need to achieve mastery of performance targets on lines 16 and 17 on mallets and Haskell-Harr lesson 7
  • Brass: achieve mastery of performance targets on lines 16, 17 and 23
  • Flute: Continue making sound through the tone hole; next lesson we need to begin coordinating fingers on instrument
  • Sax: Meet performance targets on lines 25, 28 and 30

Next lesson goals
  • Begin "Let's Go Band"
